I’m writing to you from a cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin in the peace of an early morning as a doe and her fawns tip toe by and the sun peaks out of an ominous cloud leaving a small section of the lake glistening in her rays….not to mention the birds! It’s all glorious.
I’m feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude and an urge to pay it forward which leaves me wondering if I’m offering enough with this business and how I can do more? While the “sale” is definitely necessary for the business to exist, am I creating and giving back to this community in a way that fosters, entices and deserves the sale as well as giving back to the creator and land that provides the raw materials to design what we offer.
When I set out, my mission was to create beautiful clothing in harmony with people and planet that elevates the everyday. At the time I was a mother of 4 young children and longed to get my style groove back and feel like my best self again- connected with the woman I once was but also fully expressing the woman I had become 7 years after starting her journey as a mother, wife and now designer. I imagined I wasn’t alone in that quest and 6 years later, together we’ve proven that a capsule wardrobe that actually improves the life of the people who wear it but also those who make it while considering the soil, land, communities and our collective health is something of value.
Today I envision Vincent James becoming more than a clothing brand and am excited about where this intention will lead. In the meantime, below are the 4 things I’m focused on exploring more in the weeks and months ahead. I would love to hear what else you’d like to see here.
Inspiration for styling a capsule wardrobe: even if you don’t own any VJ pieces, I hope to offer multiple ideas to style your clothes (currently working on something for the just re-stocked tube top), combinations, “what to wear for” certain events etc. that maybe you wouldn’t have thought of, that help you get a little extra wear out of a piece you may be neglecting or include pieces that may take you out of your comfort zone and into the next level of your style journey. Feeling good, creative and like the best version of ourselves matters and clothing can help get us there.
Education about the benefits of a slower, thoughtful, consumption-reduced life that focuses on improving not only our own lives but those of the collective through regenerative agriculture and respect for our privilege, power and responsibility.
Opening our minds to expand on the “mainstream” holistic health and wellness narrative. I want to explore ideas that go beyond the latest supplement and really look into an alternative explanation of why and how we can be healthy, how it’s all connected the power and benefits of raising our individual but also collective frequency and vibration.
An introduction to additional like-minded businesses and the tools to help us achieve that higher frequency.
I really would love to hear your thoughts! Please reach out in the comments below and thank you so much for being here!
Happy Sunday!
Heather
Such a fan of your ethos and how it's woven throughout all you do. (Pun not intended.) I'm curious your thoughts on maintaining and scaling a brand with such a deep commitment to sustainability. Are there other ways we're going to see commerce shift that don't have to do with endless consumption? I've watched many brands start with great intentions that eventually have to cave to investor pressure—or even just to survive. You seem like such a thought-leader there, what is enough, what is our role as individuals...not to mention I too nerd out on frequency work :)
Heather, thank you for this—it resonates deeply with me. I’ve admired your work for a while and own several pieces from your collection. I love that everything is made with such intention, and that your materials and practices are rooted in sustainability. That commitment aligns closely with my own business—even though our rugs and antiques are sourced from Turkey, they’re sustainably made, repurposed, or handmade using traditional methods and materials that honor the communities and artisans behind them.
Your vision for a capsule wardrobe continues to inspire me. I’m not quite there yet, but your pieces have become the foundation of that journey—and I always have a wish list for more! Thank you for creating such beautiful, meaningful clothing and for encouraging thoughtful consumption, both in what we wear and how we live. Your work reminds me that how we show up in the world, and what we surround ourselves with, matters deeply.
Grateful for all you do and share!
